About Us
This organization was started in Madurai City on 22nd April 1987 under the leadership of the then Superintendent of Police Mr. K.V.S. Moorthy, I.P.S. At the time of starting, the Organization was named as Tamil Nadu Traffic Warden Organization. Then it was named as Madurai Police Traffic Wardens Organization (MPTW). When the Organization was expanded throughout the State, it was again renamed to the present name - Tamil Nadu Police Traffic Warden Organization (TPTW).
To start with, 50 Home Guards were absorbed and fifty public workers took part, making the total strength to 100 wardens. Mr. Kannayiram and Mr. K. Arivanandapandian were appointed as Chief Traffic Warden and Deputy Chief Traffic Warden, respectively. After the demise of Mr. Kannayiram, Mr. V. Narayanan was appointed as Chief Warden in 1994.
After Mr. V. Narayanan, the Assistant Commissioner of Police (Traffic) was in-charge of the Organization. Mr. G.R. Balakrishnan was appointed as Chief Traffic Warden on 01-07-2002 by the Commissioner of Police, Madurai City and took the charge on 05-07-2002.
Under Mr. G.R. Balakrishnan, there are: One Senior Planning officer- Administration (who is also called as Administrative Officer-AO), one Senior Planning Officer- Traffic,one Senior Planning Officer- Road Safety Patrol, i.e RSP (which is at present vacant), Two Planning Officers- Administration, Two Planning Officers - Traffic, Three Planning Officers- Road Safety Patrol, i.e RSP

22 Wardens. As against the sanctioned strength of 200 Wardens for Madurai
City, 168 positions are vacant as on date.
Also, the Traffic Wardens in Madurai City are the only one in the State to participate in the Republic Day Ceremonial Parade for the past nineteen consecutive years and in the Independence Day ceremonial Parade held in the Armed Reserve Ground for the past four consecutive years. Also, this Unit has been adjudged as one of the best in the state. They have helped in the formation of similar Units in the towns of : Sivaganga, Tirunelveli and Theni.
